The world can be rather unforgiving if you don't know where to go at first. Try not to sprint (E) as that will drain your hunger bar very quickly. Otherwise, my best advice would be: don't give up!
I would recommend going in one direction (don't turn) until you reach grasslands, or apple tree forest. There should be plenty of fruits and vegetables to feed yourself until you can start farming.
Hello mixer, and thank you for the review. Very glad to hear you and your friends are enjoying the game.
About anvil, we prefered the use of tool ranks. It works similarly to anvil, in the sense that you can repair weapons. Unlike anvil, you don't get infinitely repairable tools which to us, feels like cheating. You need to "merge" two tools, in order to repair the better one, and keep its experience (left/right order matters... not obvious). The advantage is that a higher rank (level) tool will last longer, and be more effective (faster mining, more damage, etc.) Also, you don't need to build anvils everywhere you might need them. You just need to keep a stack of ores and a stack of sticks to build a new one, and then repair your main one.
About going up and down, I personally find minecarts and rails faster than ladders. It's a bit more work to setup, but much more fun to use.

Thanks for the review gentooza!
As for portal, we have the compass as lazerbeak12345 mentioned. We're also considering Nether for inclusion, which would add Nether and cloudlands portals: https://github.com/minetest-whynot/whynot-game/issues/23.
As a matter of personal taste, I think powered rails provide a suitably fast mode of travel without feeling like a cheat.

Many screenshots have been added.
From https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?t=25208:
It's a fork from https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=20449 which is no longer being maintained. For now, it only add translation support.
I thought sharing it on ContentDB would also be a nice feature since it was only part of the WhyNot game as far as I could tell.
