I noticed, while testing this mod, that there are still some food items, not supported by this mod.
I name some: "cherry", "pawpaw", "pear", the red mushroom from minetest game itself, "waffle" from the up to date waffles mod.
While the older 1,2MB big waffles mod, from 2018-05-13 give an error, when trying to eat a slice of bread (waffles:breadslice).

Usually if they're not supported - it's because I need to jump through programming hoops to get them to work. If they just had an "edible" group and used on_use for eating - it'd all work out X3
A lot of my code so far tries to figure out the name of a food item and make it so you can eat it if the name of this food item matches (and has the on_use aka punch function). This is for mods that don't do the above (e.g. Farms Redo by TenPlus1 was a big one)
The only issue is that if something else is named like a food and has an on_use function - but isn't a food - my eating mod will think it's a food and then I'll have to figure out how to rework it - without breaking more things. I had a similar issue with the Dad's BBQ mod - accidentally made it so you could eat spatulas ugh
I'll give those mods a look though
If a mod uses rightclick to eat - I haven't created support for that yet and I'm not precisely sure how to set that up without messing up its other functionalities (there's a mushroom mod that does this, and then Mineclonia and related have this as well). A mod can easily set up eating functionality if they check for my mod and use the appropriate functions though! (I did my best to make it as easy as possible! :D)

Yeah my mod doesn't return a proper pointed_thing and so mods that depend on it and try to index it will crash. I'll probably go through with creating a fake one so it stops happening - it's how I fixed my mod crashing on Exile v3.

Yeah, my mod checks for things named lemon and orange - so that's why they work.
Looking at the code, the only group fruit have is "flammable = 2" - so if you want to - be sure to ask to have groups added :D
If you have a link to the repository for the redwood birthday cake I can see about adding functionality. I senselessly added support for that BBQ mod that hasn't been updated since mid-2018 - what's a birthday cake to add to that mix? X3

That's what I'm suspecting - that the waffle slicebread isn't actually edible - if it uses pointed_thing - but I could be wrong. Is this group, like for the Item you saw "flammable = 2" the same as, let's say the farming redo items.lua "local function add_groups (item, groups)"? Would it look then somehow like this "food = 1"?
If yes, then I could add the specific group to the cake myself, like pie, in case of Birthdaycake, instead of adding a line into the mod, for a mod that is not available anymore.
In case of the fruits, in the compatibilities.lua, I see with the exception of "food" in line 146, nothing that could fit the fruits itself.

So fake pointed_thing "could" prevent crashing, so that it's not kicking one out of the world "hopefully". Can test tomorrow with the old waffles mod, if the slicebread still creates the problem.
But otherwise, I like that this mod covers at least most to all mods that I'm interest in, like cheese, pizzaria, the minetest game food, and even if I still didn't use this mod in combination with mobs animal or animalia, it works.
Hope that future food/farming mods, are adding the food/drink group from the beginning.

Well okay, you can place waffles in the surrounding too, so maybe these placable waffles could maybe cause the same Issue, if the name "waffle" get added to the dynamic eating mod, but that is something we will see, if "waffle" get added.
But that can happen... maybe.... probably.... someday in the future.... I think. :3

Now it's playing the waiting game, to see if the food group gets added to the fruits, and "maybe" to the waffles in the waffles mod.
If unlucky, in case of waffles it could be longer than 1 month, if I look that the last change was translation 7 month (for now) and everything else 2-3 years ago.

I guess right-click it was with the batter on the maker, to put the batter into it, afterward left-click to close maker.
The "Stack of Waffles" can be placed, but otherwise no left-click interaction, the same for the Waffle Batter, no left-click, I guess.

Well there are now 4 "Issues" open by the Fruit Tree Mod, with one done but still open (texture and tree spawned grass too), one for feature request, one for adding food group and the last one adding hunger_ng support.
It's not like I look into the settings to see which mods having settings and which not. :P
Well the Waffle Mod does have settings too, to change the recipe of the Waffle Makers "casing", "wiring" and "heating", which are not working. (opened Issue for it.)

Edit: Information from Hagatha regarding this Issue:
The reason for this error is that Etc uses texture modifiers to generate the honey bottle texture, and the TPH Eating mod doesn't take that into account. There's not much I can do to fix this from my end as using texture modifiers is the only way to have the bees module support both the retextured glass bottles from the fluid bottles module and the old style bottles from the vessels mod.

Overall sound, I had some folk say that they prefer the Minecraft sound as it's more general than the ones I have (I was chewing "honey nut cheerio" cereal lol) which are crunchier.
And yeah, can't, and I also just want to make my own sounds anyways. I much prefer making my own sounds whenever possible, I like the natural homemade feel. (and I also just like making sound effects LMAO)

"tph_eating_itemstack_entity_override" option added for consumables, must be a string name of an existing item. Will show the specified item instead of the consumable in the player's mouth.
And if I read option, than I think sometimes of something in the settings. :P

E.g. I have a thing called _eating_finished, which would now be tph_eating_finished

Now that I look ingame again at the Waffle Mod, IF you would add it on your site, could it happen that the non-eatable Items "Waffle Batter", the Waffle Maker itself, the "Stack of Waffles" and "Short Stack of Waffles", getting the eating animation?
And in case of the Fruit Tree Mod, better waiting that the food group get added on they site, doesn't matter how long it takes.
Depends on the name and functionality
If it uses on_use (when you punch something), then yes, it'd be likely my eating mod would try to set them up as ingestible loool

I guess right-click it was with the batter on the maker, to put the batter into it, afterward left-click to close maker.
The "Stack of Waffles" can be placed, but otherwise no left-click interaction, the same for the Waffle Batter, no left-click, I guess.

Well there are now 4 "Issues" open by the Fruit Tree Mod, with one done but still open (texture and tree spawned grass too), one for feature request, one for adding food group and the last one adding hunger_ng support.

Well the Waffle Mod does have settings too, to change the recipe of the Waffle Makers "casing", "wiring" and "heating", which are not working. (opened Issue for it.)
Setting for changing the Waffle Batter recipe, is working, by the Waffle Mod.
But now that I think about "Enable Supported Silly Stuff", how did you came up with that? :3

Well, Gold can be turned into cheese in case of the Pizzaria Mod. :D I like that mod, making Pizza with more steps instead of, Furnace + Food + Coal = cooked Food.

Edit: Information from Hagatha regarding this Issue: The reason for this error is that Etc uses texture modifiers to generate the honey bottle texture, and the TPH Eating mod doesn't take that into account. There's not much I can do to fix this from my end as using texture modifiers is the only way to have the bees module support both the retextured glass bottles from the fluid bottles module and the old style bottles from the vessels mod.

a friend of mine made an issue about it on my codeberg and I've since fixed it. I just haven't released the new version yet, that's why my downloads currently say max version 5.8 ;p
I have it indirectly noted in the mod description as well. Just want to do a few more things first before releasing a new version

Overall sound, I had some folk say that they prefer the Minecraft sound as it's more general than the ones I have (I was chewing "honey nut cheerio" cereal lol) which are crunchier.
Yep, in case for Issues, if the option is in the settings, what I don't know because no Account, and Google is not always helpful.

While not belonging to the programming folks, what actually does the change in the "_eating" to "tph_eating" mean?
Does that effect somehow the groups?
And what does this mean? For me it sound more like something for the programming folk. :D
"tph_eating_itemstack_entity_override" option added for consumables, must be a string name of an existing item. Will show the specified item instead of the consumable in the player's mouth.
And if I read option, than I think sometimes of something in the settings. :P
Basically if anyone did anything using my functions, they'd have to rename their stuff. Doesn't affect groups at all either :D
E.g. I have a thing called
_eating_finished, which would now betph_eating_finishedOh that wouldn't be something you could change X3 it's on an ItemStack basis. Basically it lets programmers use a different item for what you see infront of your mouth. So you could say, have a cake you can eat, but it shows a block of gravel in front of your mouth as you eat lol
