Get saplings from the leaves. Saplings can be combined with leaves to get more saplings: this is more efficient effort&time-wise than digging leaves over and over but less efficient leaves-wise. Saplings can be turned into sticks. Sticks can be turned into planks. From planks and sticks you can craft a Wooden Axe: use this to dig Wood.

Some nodes are breakable without any tools, I believe you should be able to craft something out of that :)
